Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is &#8220;a substantial lasting investment made by a company or government into a foreign concern&#8221; (Investopedia). FDI was at its highest in 2014 (14% of GDP). Since then, the numbers decreased and in 2018 it levelled out to 0.2%. In 2023 it was 0.1% of GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Even as this is being written it has been reported that the Afreximbank plans to build a property in Barbados on lands given to it by the Government of Barbados. (It seems that the current administration is recognising the need to increase foreign direct investment  in Barbados). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/conservebarb.org\/website_b4c84ced\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Afreximbank-3311578190.jpg?resize=1024%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/conservebarb.org\/website_b4c84ced\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Afreximbank-3311578190.jpg?resize=1024%2C640&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/conservebarb.org\/website_b4c84ced\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Afreximbank-3311578190.jpg?resize=300%2C188&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/conservebarb.org\/website_b4c84ced\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Afreximbank-3311578190.jpg?resize=768%2C480&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/conservebarb.org\/website_b4c84ced\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Afreximbank-3311578190.jpg?resize=1536%2C960&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/conservebarb.org\/website_b4c84ced\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Afreximbank-3311578190.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The current administration is very good at obtaining loans to build hotels and other buildings but Barbados cannot be run on just loans. Our economy needs direct foreign investment. Our economy needs to be strong enough, not only to withstand international shocks, but to be the number one economy in the Caribbean and Latin America. Increasing our foreign direct investments will enable our economy to be strong and to be number one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Everyone is aware of covid-19 and its contribution to the stagnation of economic activity the world over but the economies of the world are bouncing back and there are many companies and individuals in the world who are looking to invest in a country that will provide, not only a good return on their investment, but will provide stability to their financial portfolio. Barbados should be one of those countries. We have a stable government.
